Shape is not just a silhouette. It changes how much room you have to work, where components settle under load, and how easily the carabiner handles ropes, knots, hardware, or multiple connections.

HMS / Pear

Gate construction affects weight and clipping. Locking mechanisms affect security and operating speed. Treat them as separate decisions, then choose the combination that fits the connection.

Screwlock

A threaded sleeve is turned by hand to secure the gate. Screwlocks are easy to inspect visually, simple to operate, and versatile across a wide range of climbing systems.

Auto-Lock

The locking sleeve returns to the locked position automatically when the gate closes. It reduces the chance of forgetting to relock the carabiner after repeated operation.

A triple-lock requires three distinct actions before the gate can open. The extra action adds another barrier against unintended opening while still relocking automatically when released.

Read the Ratings

The numbers tell you how it is built to be loaded.

Once shape and gate system fit the job, use size, gate clearance, weight, and strength ratings to refine the choice. Lighter is not automatically better, and the highest kN number is not automatically the best carabiner.

Primary Strength

The long axis with the gate closed is the carabiner's intended loading direction and typically carries its highest strength rating.

Cross-Load Rating

Sideways loading is weaker than major-axis loading. Shape, orientation, and system management should keep the load on the spine whenever possible.

An open gate reduces the strength of the system. Compare this rating between otherwise appropriate carabiners, but never treat it as a substitute for a closed gate.

Gate opening is the measured clearance available when the gate is fully open. The clearance number helps indicate how easily the carabiner accepts rope, knots, hardware, and gloved fingers.

Working Area

Basket depth describes the usable working area inside the carabiner for rope, knots, belay devices, and other components. More depth can provide additional room when the connection requires it.

Carry vs. Control

Smaller, lighter carabiners reduce rack weight. Larger carabiners can be easier to clip, manipulate with gloves, and use with multiple components. Choose for the task, not the scale.

Strength ratings are not a leaderboard. First choose a carabiner that fits the connection and keeps the load correctly oriented. Use the ratings to compare appropriate options—not to make the wrong shape or gate system fit the job.

Carabiner Safety

Strength depends on orientation.

A carabiner is designed to carry load along its major axis with the gate closed. Cross-loading, open-gate loading, edge loading, and poor positioning can reduce the strength of the connection.
