Build A Better Wall.
From the wall itself to the holds that go on it, a great homewall starts with a plan. Here's how to think through space, angle, construction, hold density and setting before you start climbing.

A HOME WALL DOESN'T HAVE TO BE HUGE TO BE USEFUL.

It needs to fit your space, support the climbing you want to do, and give you enough variety to keep creating new movement.

The plywood and framing give you the platform. The holds, wall angle and setting determine what that platform becomes.

Before You Build
START WITH THE SPACE.

A garage, basement or dedicated training room can all work. Before deciding what the wall looks like, think about how the surrounding space still needs to function.

Plan for the wall itself, the space beneath it, access behind it and everything that already occupies the room.

What Else Lives Here?
Cars, bikes, storage and workbenches still need room. Don't design the wall in isolation from the rest of the space.
Access
Think Behind The Wall.
Maintaining access behind the climbing surface makes future T-nut repairs and maintenance considerably easier.
Environment
Light. Air. Chalk.
Consider ventilation and lighting before covering windows, fixtures or outlets. Chalk also travels farther than you think.
Fall Zone
Leave Room To Come Off.
Your usable space includes more than the climbing surface. Leave clear space beneath and beyond the wall for falls and swinging movement.

Design The Climbing
ANGLE CHANGES EVERYTHING.

Wall angle changes both movement and which holds are usable. Lower-angle walls allow smaller edges, worse feet and more technical climbing. Steeper terrain puts a greater premium on power, tension and positive grips.

For a general-purpose homewall, a simple overhanging plane is often more useful than complicated architecture. Walls between roughly 20° and 45° offer an especially broad range of movement.

0 – 15°
Technical
Precise feet, smaller edges, slopers and technique-focused movement.
20 – 30°
Versatile
A strong middle ground for movement, strength, circuits and a broad mix of hold types.
35 – 45°+
Power
Better suited to tension, compression, powerful movement, positive pinches and incut holds.
Don't Forget The Kicker
On steeper walls, a short vertical panel at the base can provide usable starting feet while keeping your shoes and body from immediately crowding the floor.

Build The Foundation
IT'S A CLIMBING WALL. TREAT IT LIKE A STRUCTURE.

A homewall has to support the weight of the wall itself plus the dynamic forces created by climbers moving, swinging and falling.

The more the wall overhangs, the more important its framing, bracing and attachment system become.

Fixed Wall
Attaching to an appropriate existing structure can simplify bracing, but the building itself must be capable of handling the additional loads.
Freestanding
Easier to move and useful where permanent attachment isn't an option, but it requires its own support structure and bracing.
Plan Before Cutting
Sketch the wall, verify dimensions and lay the geometry out at full scale before committing lumber and plywood.
Structural Safety
Climbing walls can weigh hundreds of pounds and experience forces substantially greater than a climber's static body weight. If there is any question about the structure, attachment points or load path, consult a qualified engineer or construction professional before building.

Build For Options
THE WALL IS ONLY AS FLEXIBLE AS YOUR HOLD PLACEMENT.

Your plywood becomes the interface between the wall and the holds. Plan the T-nut layout before the panels go up so you have enough options to reset the wall later.

More usable attachment positions mean more freedom to change spacing, orientation and movement without rebuilding anything.

Use A Structural Climbing Surface
3/4-inch plywood is commonly used for home climbing walls. The panel itself becomes part of the structural system, so this isn't the place for lightweight decorative sheet material.
Plan T-Nuts Before Installation
Drill and install your T-nuts while the panels are still accessible rather than trying to add them after the climbing surface is installed.
Avoid Framing Locations
Map the framing behind each panel so bolt holes don't land directly over studs or joists.
More Placement = More Reset Options
A dense field of usable T-nuts gives you substantially more freedom as the wall evolves.

Choose The Holds
GOOD HOLDS. BAD HOLDS. YOU NEED BOTH.

A useful homewall needs positive holds and difficult holds. A wall full of jugs is limiting. A wall filled entirely with bad crimps is limiting in a different way.

As a starting point, think roughly one-third positive and two-thirds moderate-to-difficult.

Positive
Jugs, mini-jugs, incut edges and positive pinches for warm-ups, rests and harder movement on steep terrain.
Moderate → Difficult
Crimps, edges, pinches, pockets, slopers and less-positive feet provide the range necessary to control difficulty and create varied movement.

Good and bad are relative. A hold that's comfortable on a vertical wall can become dramatically harder when you rotate the wall to 40°.

How Many Holds?
START AROUND 1 HOLD PER SQUARE FOOT.

You don't need to cover every inch of plywood on day one. Approximately one hold per square foot is a useful starting density.

A densely populated spray wall may eventually reach three to four holds per square foot.

Build the foundation first. Once you've climbed on the wall for a while, you'll have a much better idea where more density is actually useful.

Build A Useful Collection
VARIETY BEATS QUANTITY.

A hundred nearly identical crimps technically gives you a lot of holds. It doesn't give you a particularly versatile wall.

Build across grip types so you can alter movement, intensity, hand position and body position without completely rebuilding the wall.

Universal Size Chart
A COMMON LANGUAGE FOR HOLD SIZE.

Terms like small, large and XL become pretty meaningless when you're comparing completely different shapes.

The Universal Size Chart creates a common reference. A hold's size ring is determined by the smallest standardized ring that completely contains the hold.

Add Dimension
YOUR WALL DOESN'T HAVE TO STAY FLAT.

Volumes can completely change the character of a homewall without changing the wall itself.

They create new surfaces and angles for compression, opposition, lateral movement and body positions that are difficult to create on a single plane.

Even one or two strategically positioned volumes can make a relatively small wall feel substantially bigger.

Think of volumes as architecture—not just giant holds.

How Do You Want To Train?
SPRAY WALL OR CIRCUIT WALL?

There's no single correct way to set a homewall. Decide what you want to train, then build the hold collection and setting style around that objective.

Option 01
Spray Wall
Cover the wall with a dense collection of holds and build problems from different combinations. Maximum variety in limited space.
Power Limit Bouldering Finger Strength Movement
Option 02
Circuit Wall
Build longer sequences that keep you moving. Moderate difficulty and strategically placed positive holds let you create extended climbing and repeated laps.

With enough density and a thoughtful mix of positive and difficult shapes, the same wall can do both.

The Wall Doesn't End At The Plywood
PLAN WHERE YOU'RE GOING TO LAND.

Your fall zone is part of the wall design. Keep the area beneath and around the climbing surface clear and appropriately padded.

The steeper the wall and the more dynamic the climbing, the farther falls and swings can travel beyond the edge of the climbing surface.

CLEAR THE ZONE.
Furniture, tools, storage bins, exposed concrete edges and other hard objects have no place in the usable fall area.

Pad the complete landing area—not just the space directly below the starting holds.

Account for swinging falls, sideways movement and dynamic climbing.
+
Never rely on bare concrete, asphalt, wood, turf or grass as a suitable landing surface.

Reevaluate the landing zone whenever you change wall geometry, volumes or dynamic movement.

Keep It Climbable
BUILD IT. CLIMB IT. INSPECT IT.

Holds loosen. T-nuts can wear. Hardware moves. A homewall should be inspected regularly rather than treated as something you build once and forget.

Check for loose or spinning holds and retighten them as necessary.

Damage
Remove cracked, damaged or questionable holds from use.

Inspect bolts, screws, T-nuts and attachment hardware for wear or damage.

Structure
Watch seams, joints and framing for movement or signs of unusual stress.

Now Add Holds
BUILD THE COLLECTION. THEN FILL THE GAPS.

You don't need to know exactly what the finished wall needs before you climb on it.

Start with a broad collection of shapes, grips and difficulties. Use the wall. Reset it. The missing pieces will reveal themselves quickly.

Going steeper? Add positive grips that let you create harder movement rather than simply harder holds.
One Last Thing
THE BEST HOMEWALL ISN'T THE ONE WITH THE MOST HOLDS.
It's the one you keep climbing on.

Start with a solid structure and enough variety to create different movement. Learn what works. Add holds deliberately. Reset it often.

A relatively small piece of plywood can become a remarkably powerful training tool when every hold earns its place.
